Immersive Experimentation

Immersive experimentation is an engineering approach that uses interactive digital or physical environments to test designs, systems, and human interactions under realistic conditions. It combines technologies such as virtual or augmented reality, simulation models, haptic interfaces, and real-time sensor feedback so users can manipulate variables and observe system responses without immediately building or risking a full-scale prototype. Engineers apply this method to product development, robotics, manufacturing, infrastructure, and safety training. By enabling repeatable trials, rapid iteration, and evaluation of human-system performance, immersive experimentation can reduce development costs, reveal design weaknesses, and support safer, more informed engineering decisions.

Prediction and characterization of these forces is...

2010

Classical fear conditioning paradigm was adapted for human participants in a fully immersive virtual reality setting. Using a discrimination paradigm, conditioned fear, cue and context memory retention, and extinction was measured with skin conductance response to dynamic virtual snakes and spiders (the conditioned stimuli) in two distinct virtual contexts.

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University When orchestrating an experiment, it is important that the experience elicits the most natural reactions from the participants as possible. Researchers accomplish much of this through their creation of the experimental settings. Many research projects focus on interactions between two or more people. In these situations the environment or setting must often be less natural; often only one person...
