Octet Truss

An octet truss is a three-dimensional lattice structure formed by repeating tetrahedral and octahedral cells, providing high stiffness and strength with relatively low material use. Its triangulated geometry transfers loads primarily through axial tension and compression in interconnected struts, limiting bending and resisting deformation across multiple directions. Engineers use octet trusses to design lightweight structural components, cellular materials, and architected metamaterials for applications such as aerospace, transportation, construction, and additive manufacturing. Studying their geometry, load paths, and failure behavior helps researchers tailor mechanical performance while reducing mass and material consumption.

Many covalent molecules have central atoms that do not have eight electrons in their Lewis structures. These molecules fall into three categories: Odd-electron molecules have an odd number of valence electrons and therefore have an unpaired electron. Electron-deficient molecules have a central atom with fewer electrons than needed for a noble gas configuration. Hypervalent molecules have a central atom that has more electrons than needed for a noble gas configuration. Odd-electron...

Chemical bonds are complex interactions between two or more atoms or ions, which reduce the potential energy of the molecule. Gilbert N. Lewis developed a model called the Lewis model that simplified the depiction of chemical bond formation and provided straightforward explanations for the chemical bonds seen in most common compounds. Lewis Model The Lewis model depicts chemical bond formation by the sharing or transfer of valence electrons, which helps to attain a stable electron...

A space truss is a three-dimensional counterpart of a planar truss. These structures consist of members connected at their ends, often utilizing ball-and-socket joints to create a stable and versatile framework. The space truss is widely used in various construction projects due to its adaptability and capacity to withstand complex loads. At the core of a space truss lies the fundamental unit known as the tetrahedron. This structure is composed of six members that form a three-dimensional shape...

A truss is a structural framework consisting of slender members connected at joints, designed to support external loads while minimizing material usage and weight. Simple trusses are a type of planar truss where all members lie within a single two-dimensional plane. The most basic planar truss is a simple truss with three members arranged in a triangular formation. This triangular truss is inherently stable and rigid due to its geometry, making it an ideal starting point for creating more...

A space truss is a three-dimensional counterpart of a planar truss. These structures consist of members connected at their ends, often utilizing ball-and-socket joints to create a stable and versatile framework. Due to its adaptability and capacity to withstand complex loads, the space truss is widely used in various construction projects. Consider a tripod consisting of a tetrahedral space truss with a ball-and-socket joint at C. Suppose the height and lengths of the horizontal and vertical...
