Palladium Single Crystal

Palladium single crystals are highly ordered metallic materials composed of palladium atoms arranged in one continuous crystal lattice, making them valuable for studying structure–property relationships in engineering and materials science. Their exposed surfaces can be prepared with defined crystallographic orientations, such as low-index planes, so researchers can examine how atomic coordination, surface defects, adsorption, and electronic structure influence behavior. These crystals serve as model electrodes and catalyst surfaces for investigating hydrogen absorption, surface reactions, and electrochemical processes under controlled conditions. Insights from single-crystal studies help explain and improve the performance, selectivity, and durability of palladium-based materials used in sensing, energy technologies, catalysis, and hydrogen-related engineering systems.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Faben Cruz, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the concept of a palladium-catalyzed cross coupling. The set-up of a typical Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reaction will be illustrated. Pd-catalyzed cross coupling reactions have had a profound effect on how synthetic chemists create molecules. These reactions have enabled chemists to construct bonds in new and more efficient ways. Such reactions have found widespread...

Single Crystal and Powder X-ray Diffraction

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University X-ray crystallography is a technique that uses X-rays to study the structure of molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments are routinely carried out with either single-crystal or powdered samples. Single-crystal XRD: Single-crystal XRD allows for absolute structure determination. With single-crystal XRD data, the exact atomic positions can be observed, and thus bond lengths and angles can be determined. This...

2016

This manuscript describes the bending process of an organic single crystal-based field-effect transistor to maintain a functioning device for electronic property measurement. The results suggest that bending causes changes in the molecular spacing in the crystal and thus in the charge hopping rate, which is important in flexible electronics.
