Pressure Ratio Measurement

Pressure ratio measurement is the determination of the relationship between two pressures, typically the upstream and downstream absolute pressures in an engineering system. It uses calibrated pressure sensors or transducers to measure each pressure under defined flow and operating conditions, then calculates their quotient to characterize compression, expansion, or pressure loss. In fluid machinery, pressure ratio helps evaluate compressor and turbine performance, assess system efficiency, and identify restrictions or operating limits. Accurate measurements support equipment testing, aerodynamic analysis, process control, and the design and optimization of engines, pumps, ventilation systems, and other pressure-driven technologies.

Ratio Level of Measurement

2023

The way a set of data is measured is called its level of measurement. Correct statistical procedures depend on a researcher being familiar with levels of measurement. For analysis, data are classified into four levels of measurement—nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. A set of data measured using the ratio scale takes care of the ratio problem and provides complete information. Ratio scale data are like interval scale data, except they have a zero point and ratios can be calculated. For...

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure
