Shear Cell Sample Environment

Shear Cell Sample Environment is the controlled setting in which a material is placed and tested inside a shear cell, allowing researchers to study its response to applied deformation under defined conditions. A moving surface or tool generates a velocity gradient through the sample, producing shear stress or strain while the cell maintains relevant variables such as temperature, atmosphere, geometry, and loading conditions. In engineering, this environment supports measurements of flow behavior, viscosity, deformation, mixing, and structural changes in fluids, suspensions, polymers, and soft materials. Controlled shear testing improves the interpretation of material properties and helps connect laboratory measurements with manufacturing, processing, and device-design requirements.

2016

Different levels and patterns of fluid shear are known to modulate endothelial gene expression, phenotype and susceptibility to disease. We discuss the assembly and use of 'shear rings': a model that produces unidirectional, periodic shear stress patterns. Shear rings are simple to assemble, economical and can produce high cell yields.

During the infection process, a key step is the adhesion of pathogens with host cells. In most instances this adhesion step occurs in the presence of mechanical stress generated by flowing liquid. We describe a technique that introduces shear stress as an important parameter in the study of bacterial adhesion.

2015

The protocol described details an experimental procedure to quantify Red Blood Cell (RBC) aggregates under a controlled and constant shear rate, based on image processing techniques. The goal of this protocol is to relate RBC aggregate sizes to the corresponding shear rate in a controlled microfluidic environment.

Shearing Stress

2026

Shearing stress, denoted by the Greek letter tau (τ), is stress caused by forces acting transversely on an object. These forces create internal ones within the entity in the plane where the external forces are applied. The resultant of these internal forces is the shear in the section. The average shearing stress can be calculated by dividing the shear by the area of the cross-section. However, this is an average value as the distribution of shearing stress across a section varies. It can...
