Theophylline Anhydrate

Theophylline anhydrate is a water-free crystalline form of theophylline, a methylxanthine compound whose solid-state structure influences material performance and pharmaceutical processing. Under suitable humidity or liquid-water conditions, water can enter the crystal lattice and drive conversion to theophylline monohydrate, changing crystal packing, mass, and other physicochemical properties. In engineering, this hydrate transformation is important for powder handling, storage, formulation, and quality control because it can affect stability, dissolution behavior, and manufacturing consistency. Characterizing moisture sensitivity and controlling environmental conditions therefore support reliable design of theophylline-containing products and other solid pharmaceutical materials.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...

Determining the Empirical Formula

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams - SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Determining the chemical formula of a compound is at the heart of what chemists do in the laboratory every day. Many tools are available to aid in this determination, but one of the simplest (and most accurate) is the determination of the empirical formula. Why is this useful? Because of the law of conservation of mass, any reaction can be followed gravimetrically, or by change in mass. The empirical...

Comparative Study on the Polysaccharide Contents and Antioxidant Activities of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Hippophae gyantsensis

2025

This study compared the polysaccharide contents of Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis Rousi and Hippophae gyantsensis (Rousi) Y. S. Lian obtained through hot water extraction and quantified through phenol-sulfuric acid colorimetry. We also investigated in vitro antioxidant activities of polysaccharides from these two Hippophae species through 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging experiments.

An operationally simple procedure for the synthesis of ortho-trifluoromethoxylated aniline derivatives via a two-step sequence of O-trifluoromethylation of N-aryl-N-hydroxyacetamide followed by thermally induced intramolecular OCF3-migration is reported.
