Porosity Control

Porosity control is the deliberate management of the volume, size, distribution, and connectivity of pores within a material, which strongly influences its mechanical, thermal, and transport properties. Engineers control porosity by adjusting material composition and processing conditions, such as particle packing, compaction pressure, solvent removal, foaming, or sintering temperature, to promote or limit void formation. In ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites, these strategies help balance strength, permeability, density, insulation, and fluid absorption, supporting applications that range from filtration and lightweight structures to energy systems and biomedical devices.

Porosity and Absorption of Aggregate

2024

Aggregates contain pores of varying sizes; while some are completely enclosed within the particles, others open onto the surface, allowing water to penetrate. The porosity of aggregates is a major factor contributing to the overall porosity of concrete, given that aggregates constitute about three-quarters of concrete's volume. When all pores in an aggregate are filled with water, the aggregate is considered saturated and surface-dry. If left in dry air, water will evaporate until the aggregate...

Porosity in Cement Paste

2024

The porosity of concrete is a measure of the void spaces within its structure. These spaces impact its strength and durability significantly. When water and cement interact, a chemical reaction called hydration creates a semi-solid paste. This paste includes combined water, making up approximately 23% of the cement's dry mass, and gel water, which fills minuscule voids known as gel pores, accounting for about 28% of the cement gel volume. The balance of water to cement in the mix is critical—it...

Archimedes-Based Glycerol Displacement for Electrode Porosity Measurement in Lead-Acid Batteries

2026

Here, we present a simple and low-cost glycerol displacement method based on Archimedes' principle for measuring lead-acid battery electrode porosities. The method demonstrates good reproducibility and is safer than traditional techniques, requiring low-hazard chemicals and equipment. Combining the technique with microstructural analysis by X-ray diffraction provides information on battery electrode properties and degradation.
