Oceanic Circulation Simulation

Oceanic circulation simulation is the use of mathematical and computational models to represent how seawater moves through the global ocean, helping researchers understand climate, ecosystems, and marine transport. These models divide the ocean into grid cells and calculate fluid motion from interacting forces and conditions, including wind stress, gravity, Earth’s rotation, temperature, and salinity, which together determine water density and circulation. By varying inputs and comparing outputs with observations, simulations can reproduce currents, vertical mixing, heat transport, and exchanges between the ocean and atmosphere. They support climate projections, interpretation of marine environments, assessment of pollutant dispersal, and planning for changing ocean conditions.

Fetal Circulation

2024

Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta. Two umbilical arteries transport blood from the fetus to the placenta. At the placenta, the blood absorbs oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously eliminating waste products. This oxygen-enriched and nutrient-rich blood then returns to the fetus through one...

Coronary Circulation

2024

The heart, an organ critical to survival, gets nourishment not from the blood it pumps but from a separate circulation system known as coronary circulation. This is the shortest circulation in the body and is responsible for supplying the heart with the nutrients it needs to function effectively. Coronary circulation begins at the base of the aorta, where two main arteries arise—the left and right coronary arteries. These arteries encircle the heart in the coronary sulcus and supply the...

A Model to Simulate Clinically Relevant Hypoxia in Humans

Hypoxia simulation in humans has usually been performed by inhaling hypoxic gas mixtures. For this study, apneic divers were used to simulate dynamic hypoxia in humans. Additionally, physiological changes in desaturation and re-saturation kinetics were evaluated with non-invasive tools such as Near-Infrared-Spectroscopy (NIRS) and peripheral oxygenation saturation (SpO2).

MPI CyberMotion Simulator: Implementation of a Novel Motion Simulator to Investigate Multisensory Path Integration in Three Dimensions

2012

An efficient way to gain insight into how humans navigate themselves in three dimensions is described. The method takes advantage of a motion simulator capable of moving observers in ways unattainable by traditional simulators. Results confirm that movement in the horizontal plane is underestimated, while vertical movement is overestimated.
