Soil Tank Apparatus

A Soil Tank Apparatus is a controlled experimental setup used to examine soil behavior under defined environmental conditions. It matters because researchers can study soil processes in a contained system while controlling variables that are difficult to isolate in the field. Depending on its design, the apparatus enables controlled addition, movement, drainage, and sampling of water or dissolved substances through the soil matrix, allowing measurements of infiltration, retention, and transport over time. In environmental research, it supports reproducible investigations of contaminant movement, soil remediation, nutrient dynamics, and plant-soil interactions, helping inform ecosystem management and pollution-control strategies.

Phospholipid fatty acids provide information about the structure of soil microbial communities. We present methods for extraction from soil samples with a single-phase chloroform mixture, fractionation of extracted lipids using solid phase extraction columns, and methanolysis to produce fatty acid methyl esters, which are analyzed by capillary gas chromatography.

Measuring and Mapping Patterns of Soil Erosion and Deposition Related to Soil Carbonate Concentrations Under Agricultural Management

2017

Spatial patterns of soil erosion and deposition can be inferred from differences in ground elevation mapped at appropriate time increments. Such changes in elevation are related to changes in near-surface soil carbonates. Repeatable methods for field and laboratory measurements of these quantities and data analysis methods are described here.
