Mitochondrial Activity

Mitochondrial activity encompasses the processes by which mitochondria generate energy and regulate cellular metabolism, signaling, and survival. Through the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondria produce ATP while also influencing reactive oxygen species, calcium balance, and metabolic pathways. In immunology and infection, these functions shape immune-cell activation, differentiation, and inflammatory responses, while pathogens can alter mitochondrial metabolism to support replication or evade host defenses. Measuring mitochondrial respiration, membrane potential, and related metabolic changes helps researchers assess immune-cell function, understand host-pathogen interactions, and identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
