Respiratory Panel Assay

A respiratory panel assay is a laboratory test that simultaneously detects multiple viral and bacterial pathogens responsible for respiratory infections, supporting rapid diagnosis and informed patient management. Most panels use multiplex nucleic acid amplification, in which pathogen-specific primers target genetic sequences in a respiratory specimen and amplified products are identified through fluorescent or other signal-based detection. In immunology and infection research, these assays help distinguish co-infections from single-agent disease, characterize patterns of respiratory pathogen circulation, and guide decisions about isolation, antimicrobial use, and further testing. Their broad coverage can improve diagnostic efficiency, although results must be interpreted alongside symptoms, specimen quality, and clinical context.

2024

Wood panel products are essential materials used in construction for applications such as flooring, siding, and roofing, typically available in standard dimensions of 4 feet by 8 feet, with thicknesses varying from one-quarter of an inch to one and one-eighth inches. Among the most common types of wood panels is plywood, which is produced by gluing multiple layers of thin wood veneers under pressure. The grain of the outer veneers runs lengthwise, while the grains of the interior layers run...

Source: Bouillier, C., et al. Generation, Amplification, and Titration of Recombinant Respiratory Syncytial Viruses. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)The video demonstrates a plaque titration assay used to quantify infectious recombinant respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in epithelial cell monolayers. It presents the infection of host cells with serially diluted viral suspensions, the restriction of viral spread by a cellulose-based semi-solid overlay, and the formation of localized plaques from cytopathic...

An Assay to Measure the Neutralizing Antibody Titer Specific for Respiratory Syncytial Virus

This video demonstrates an assay for measuring neutralizing antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Pre-incubation with serum containing RSV-neutralizing antibodies neutralizes the virus particles, reducing cellular infection and plaque formation. Virus-infected cells are then subjected to fixation, blocking, and fluorophore-conjugated antibody labeling for plaque visualization. This process enables the identification of the highest serum dilution that neutralizes fifty percent of...

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Disorders of the respiratory system with a chief complaint of shortness of breath are among the most common reasons for both outpatient and inpatient evaluation. The most obvious visible clue to a respiratory problem will be whether the patient is displaying any signs of respiratory distress, such as fast respiratory rate and/or cyanosis. In a clinical situation, this will always require...
