Protein Sequence Database

A protein sequence database is an organized digital collection of amino acid sequences that enables researchers to store, retrieve, compare, and interpret proteins across organisms. Sequences are searched using identifiers, similarity algorithms, and alignment methods that reveal conserved regions, domains, mutations, and evolutionary relationships, while associated annotations can link proteins to functions or source organisms. In immunology and infection research, these resources support the identification of pathogen proteins, prediction and comparison of antigenic or epitope-containing regions, and analysis of host immune molecules. They also help researchers track sequence variation, investigate virulence-associated proteins, and inform vaccine, diagnostic, and therapeutic development.

2026

Effective research begins with the ability to navigate academic databases efficiently. Unlike general web search engines, scholarly databases are designed to index peer-reviewed articles, conference proceedings, and other credible academic publications. Developing a structured search strategy ensures that researchers can identify relevant, high-quality sources with precision. For example, when studying how sleep patterns relate to circadian rhythms in humans, researchers should move beyond...

Plant intercellular connections, the plasmodesmata (Pd), play central roles in plant physiology and plant-virus interactions. Critical to Pd transport are sorting signals that direct proteins to Pd. However, our knowledge about these sequences is still in its infancy. We describe a strategy to identify Pd localization signals in Pd-targeted proteins.
