Capsular Deficiency

Capsular deficiency is a loss, attenuation, or failure of a joint capsule, the connective-tissue envelope that stabilizes and guides joint motion. When the capsule becomes overly lax, torn, or absent, it provides insufficient restraint against abnormal translation; in the shoulder, this can produce recurrent subluxation, dislocation, pain, and loss of function. Clinicians assess capsular deficiency through the patient’s history, physical examination, and imaging, then match treatment to its cause and severity. Management may include targeted rehabilitation to strengthen dynamic stabilizers, while persistent instability can require capsular tightening, repair, or reconstruction. Understanding this condition supports accurate diagnosis and individualized care.
