Clamping Forceps

Clamping forceps are hinged surgical instruments that grasp, compress, or temporarily occlude tissues, blood vessels, tubes, or other structures during medical procedures. Their jaws close through a pivot mechanism, while a locking ratchet can maintain controlled pressure without continuous hand force; jaw shape, size, and serration determine how securely and gently they hold the target. In surgery, these forceps support hemostasis by compressing vessels, isolate tissue during dissection, and help secure sutures, drains, or tubing. Proper selection and handling can improve visibility, limit tissue trauma, and promote safer, more controlled procedures across operative and emergency settings.

Patch Clamp Electrophysiology

2023

Neuron cell membranes are populated with ion channels that control the movement of charge into and out of the cell, thereby regulating neuron firing. One extremely useful technique for investigating the biophysical properties of these channels is called patch clamp recording. In this method, neuroscientists place a polished glass micropipette against a cell and apply suction to form a high resistance seal. This process isolates a small “patch” of membrane that contains one or more ion channels.

Hyperinsulinemic-Euglycemic Clamp in the Conscious Rat

The hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp is the "gold standard" for the assessment of insulin action. Insulin is infused at a constant rate stimulating glucose uptake. The amount of exogenous glucose infused to counter this drop is indicative of insulin sensitivity. Here the procedure is performed on a conscious, unrestrained rat.

A hyperglycemic clamp is used for measuring insulin release with a maintained higher blood glucose concentration. A hypoglycemic clamp is for measuring glucose production induced by counter-regulatory responses. Both methods use the same surgical procedure. Here, we present a clamp technique to assess systemic glucose metabolism.
