Glass Prosthesis Customization

Glass prosthesis customization is the individualized design and fabrication of glass ocular prostheses to replace the visible appearance of a lost or damaged eye. An ocularist shapes heat-softened glass into a hollow shell, then builds in iris color, scleral features, pupil position, and contours that correspond to the patient’s orbital anatomy and remaining eye. Careful fitting and visual matching help the prosthesis move naturally with the socket and eyelids while supporting comfort and retention. In medicine, this process contributes to facial symmetry, cosmetic rehabilitation, and psychosocial well-being after eye loss or severe ocular injury.

2019

This manuscript shows each step of customizing a cryolite glass prosthetic eye including some major advantages of the use of cryolite glass for manufacturing an eye prosthesis compared to poly(methyl methacrylate). In addition, this manuscript gives ophthalmologists better insight into the ocularistic care that could improve interprofessional collaboration.

A Standardized Method for Measuring Internal Lung Surface Area via Mouse Pneumonectomy and Prosthesis Implantation

Internal lung surface area (ISA) is a critical criterion for assessing lung morphology and physiology in lung diseases and injury-induced alveolar regeneration. We describe here a standardized method that can minimize the measurement bias for ISA in both lung pneumonectomy and prosthesis implantation mouse models.

Oscillation and Reaction Board Techniques for Estimating Inertial Properties of a Below-knee Prosthesis

2014

Body segmental inertial properties are required for inverse dynamics modeling. Using an oscillation and reaction board technique, inertial properties of below-knee prostheses were measured. Using direct measures of prosthesis inertia in the inverse dynamics model of the prosthetic leg resulted in lower magnitudes of resultant joint forces and moments.

Engineering Platform and Experimental Protocol for Design and Evaluation of a Neurally-controlled Powered Transfemoral Prosthesis

Neural-machine interfaces (NMI) have been developed to identify the user's locomotion mode. These NMIs are potentially useful for neural control of powered artificial legs, but have not been fully demonstrated. This paper presented (1) our designed engineering platform for easy implementation and development of neural control for powered lower limb prostheses and (2) an experimental setup and protocol in a laboratory environment to evaluate neurally-controlled artificial legs on patients with...

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...
