Pressure Transducer Catheter

A pressure transducer catheter is a medical device that measures pressure within the body and converts it into a readable electrical signal, providing real-time information about physiological function. In use, a catheter positions either a miniature pressure sensor or a fluid-filled lumen at the measurement site; pressure is transmitted to a strain-gauge transducer, which changes electrical output in proportion to the applied force. After calibration and zeroing, the system records pressure values and waveforms in locations such as the heart and blood vessels. These measurements support hemodynamic assessment, diagnosis, procedural guidance, and monitoring during clinical research and care.

2023

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Fluid pressure is an important flow characteristic that is required to determine the aerodynamics of a system. One of the oldest and still existing pressure measurement systems is the manometer due to its accuracy and simplicity of operation. The manometer is generally a U-shaped glass tube that is partially filled with liquid, as shown in Figure 1. The U-tube manometer requires no...

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.

The non-nutritive suck (NNS) device can easily collect and quantify NNS features using a pacifier connected to a pressure transducer and recorded through a data acquisition system and laptop. Quantification of NNS parameters can provide valuable insight into a child's current and future neurodevelopment.

Central Venous Catheter Insertion: Femoral Vein

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations, including vascular access, vasopressor and caustic medication delivery, central venous pressure monitoring, volume resuscitation, total parental nutrition, hemodialysis, and frequent phlebotomy. There are three veins in the body that are accessed for central venous cannulation: the internal jugular, the subclavian, and the...
