Immunosuppressed Patient

An immunosuppressed patient is a person whose immune defenses are weakened by a disease, medication, or medical treatment, increasing vulnerability to infections and some malignancies. Immunosuppression can reduce immune-cell production, activation, or communication; for example, corticosteroids limit inflammatory signaling, while cytotoxic and transplant therapies suppress lymphocyte proliferation and function. In medicine, recognizing the type and severity of immune impairment guides infection screening, preventive care, treatment selection, and monitoring for complications. This knowledge supports safer surgery, transplantation, cancer therapy, and management of chronic inflammatory disorders while helping clinicians balance disease control against the risk of inadequate host defense.

Using optimized human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) ex vivo assays, we showed that a combustible tobacco product preparation markedly suppresses receptor-mediated intracellularly secreted cytokines and cytolytic ability of effector PBMCs. These rapid assays may be useful in product evaluation and understanding the potential long-term effects of tobacco exposure.
