Invasive Hemodynamic Measurements

Invasive hemodynamic measurements are catheter-based techniques that directly assess cardiovascular pressures, blood flow, and related performance when noninvasive tests cannot provide sufficient detail. Arterial, central venous, or pulmonary artery catheters transmit pressure waveforms, while methods such as thermodilution estimate cardiac output by tracking changes in blood temperature after a measured injectate. In medicine, these measurements help characterize shock, pulmonary hypertension, valvular disease, and cardiac dysfunction, supporting diagnosis, treatment selection, and monitoring in critically ill patients and during complex procedures. Their interpretation requires attention to catheter position, calibration, respiratory variation, and the clinical context to ensure reliable results.

We combined frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy measures of cerebral hemoglobin oxygenation with diffuse correlation spectroscopy measures of cerebral blood flow index to estimate an index of oxygen metabolism. We tested the utility of this measure as a bedside screening tool to evaluate the health and development of the newborn brain.

We present a protocol of creating right ventricular dysfunction in a pig model by inducing ARDS. We demonstrate invasive monitoring of left and right ventricular cardiac output using flow probes around the aorta and the pulmonary artery, as well as blood pressure measurements in the aorta and pulmonary artery.

(2020)This video demonstrates an impedance-based assay to measure glioblastoma cell invasion and migration. Cells degrade the extracellular matrix, move through microporous membranes, and adhere to electrodes, generating impedance. This real-time analysis reflects their invasive potential for cancer research applications.

An assay to quantitatively measure Transforming Growth Factor (TGF)-β-induced invasion in 3-dimensional collagen gels is described. This assay takes advantage of the MCF10A series of cell lines, which represent different stages of breast cancer development. This method can be adopted to be used with other cell lines and might be used to investigate other potential activators or inhibitors of invasion.
