Lateral Thoracotomy

Lateral thoracotomy is an open surgical approach that accesses the thoracic cavity through an incision along the side of the chest, providing direct exposure to the lungs, pleura, esophagus, and mediastinal structures. The surgeon divides or separates the chest-wall muscles, enters the space between the ribs, and gently retracts the ribs to reach the targeted anatomy, often with selective ventilation of the opposite lung to improve operative access. This approach supports procedures such as lung resection, esophageal surgery, treatment of thoracic trauma, and management of selected intrathoracic diseases. Its broad exposure makes it valuable when minimally invasive access is unsuitable or greater surgical control is required.

Implantation of a biograft to treat myocardial infarction induced by LAD ligation in a rodent model has conventionally required two open-heart surgeries. In order to reduce mortality and provide optimal conditions for fixation of solid and gelatinous biomatrices associated with cells, minimally invasive procedures have been developed.

Lateralization

2024

Brain lateralization refers to the division of mental processes and functions between the two hemispheres of the brain, a phenomenon that optimizes neural efficiency and underpins complex abilities in humans. This specialization allows each hemisphere to perform tasks where it has a comparative advantage, facilitating more refined cognitive capabilities across different domains. • The left hemisphere is particularly proficient in managing logical and language-related activities. • It plays a...

Because many zebrafish models of neurological and non-neurological diseases are studied in the adult fish rather than the embryo/larvae, we developed a quantitative lateral line regenerative assay that can be applied to adult zebrafish disease models. The assay involved resolution at the 1) neuromast and 2) individual hair cell levels.

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Lateral canthotomy is a potentially eyesight-saving procedure when performed emergently for an orbital compartment syndrome. An orbital compartment syndrome results from a buildup of pressure behind the eye; as pressure mounts, both the optic nerve and its vascular supply are compressed, rapidly leading to nerve damage and blindness if the pressure is not quickly relieved. The medial and lateral...
