Lung Recruitment Maneuver

A lung recruitment maneuver is a ventilatory technique that temporarily increases airway pressure to reopen collapsed or poorly aerated alveoli, helping restore functional lung volume and gas exchange. By applying a controlled rise in inspiratory pressure, often followed by an appropriate level of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), the maneuver promotes alveolar opening and helps prevent immediate derecruitment. In medicine, lung recruitment may support oxygenation during mechanical ventilation, particularly when atelectasis contributes to impaired respiratory function. Its use requires careful patient selection and monitoring because excessive pressure can cause overdistension, hemodynamic compromise, or other ventilator-associated injury.

An In Vitro Flow Investigation of the Effect of Stromal Cells on Leukocyte Recruitment

The video demonstrates a method for investigating the impact of stromal cells on leukocyte recruitment. In a parallel plate flow chamber model, pro-inflammatory cytokines induce the expression of adhesion receptors by endothelial cells, facilitating neutrophil recruitment and migration. The cross-talk between stromal cells and endothelial cells diminishes neutrophil recruitment to the endothelial cells.

The ability of inflamed endothelium to recruit leukocytes from flow is regulated by mesenchymal stromal cells. We describe two in vitro models incorporating primary human cells that can be used to assess neutrophil recruitment from flow and examine the role that mesenchymal stromal cells play in regulating this process.

Monitoring Neutrophil Recruitment Dynamics and Bacterial Burden at the Infection Site in a Murine Model

2025

This video demonstrates in vivo imaging to study the neutrophil recruitment dynamics at an infection site in an immunocompromised, transgenic mouse with GFP-expressing neutrophils. It involves injecting luminescent bacteria to cause an infection. This leads to neutrophil recruitment to the infection site, whose tracking is done by imaging.

This paper describes a striaghforward and efficient method of intubating mice for pulmonary function measurements or pulmonary instillation, that allows the mice to recover and be studied at later times. The procedure involves an inexpensive fiberoptic light source that directly illuminates the trachea.
