Neuroma Prevention

Neuroma prevention refers to strategies that limit the formation of painful, disorganized nerve tissue after peripheral nerve injury, surgery, or amputation. When regenerating axons lack an appropriate distal target, they may sprout into scar tissue, creating a sensitive nerve-end mass and generating abnormal electrical activity. Prevention therefore emphasizes gentle nerve handling, tension-free repair when feasible, and controlled management or redirection of nerve ends, including techniques such as targeted muscle reinnervation and regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces. In medicine, these approaches can reduce post-amputation and post-traumatic neuropathic pain, improve residual-limb function, and support rehabilitation through early risk assessment and timely follow-up.

Generating a Rat Model of Tibial Neuroma Transposition

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Stromal Vascular Fraction-Enriched Fat Grafting for the Management of Symptomatic Neuromas

Source: Zimmermann, S., et.al. Stromal Vascular Fraction-enriched Fat Grafting for the Treatment of Symptomatic End-neuromata. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the surgical procedure for neurolysis and stromal vascular fraction (SVF)-enriched fat grafting in the management of symptomatic neuroma. Neurolysis removes adhesion tissue to restore nerve gliding, while SVF-enriched fat grafting is applied around the nerve to create a protective barrier, support nerve healing, and enhance...

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...
