Obstructive Nephropathy Model

An obstructive nephropathy model is an experimental system that reproduces kidney injury caused by impaired urinary flow, a condition that can lead to hydronephrosis and progressive loss of renal function. In common approaches, researchers partially or completely block a ureter, increasing upstream pressure and triggering tubular injury, inflammation, oxidative stress, and interstitial fibrosis. These models help clarify how urinary obstruction damages renal tissue and how injury progresses toward chronic kidney disease. They are widely used in medicine to evaluate pathological mechanisms, identify biomarkers, and test treatments aimed at relieving obstruction or limiting inflammation and fibrosis.

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.

Definition Diabetic nephropathy is a chronic kidney complication that results from prolonged hyperglycemia.Prevalence It is the most common cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) worldwide, affecting up to half of individuals with diabetes.Pathophysiology • Sustained hyperglycemia triggers multiple hemodynamic and metabolic changes in the kidney. • Early in the disease, increased renal blood flow and glomerular hyperfiltration occur due to afferent arteriolar...
