Participatory Research

Participatory research is a collaborative approach in which researchers and the people affected by a health issue jointly shape the research process, making it more responsive to community priorities and lived experience. In medicine, patients, caregivers, clinicians, and community organizations may contribute to defining research questions, designing methods, interpreting findings, and sharing results through ongoing feedback and shared decision-making. This approach can improve recruitment, cultural relevance, trust, and the practical value of interventions, particularly in underserved populations. Participatory research also helps identify barriers to care and supports health programs that communities are more likely to adopt and sustain.
