Adhesive Tape Attachment

Adhesive tape attachment is the use of pressure-sensitive tape to secure dressings, tubing, electrodes, or other medical materials to the skin or external surfaces. It works when pressure brings the tape’s adhesive into close contact with the attachment surface, creating intermolecular forces that maintain fixation while allowing removal when needed. In medicine, proper tape attachment helps stabilize wound coverings, protect treatment sites, and reduce unwanted movement of monitoring or delivery devices. Its effectiveness depends on factors such as skin condition, surface cleanliness, tape selection, and application technique, making it an important practical skill in clinical care and biomedical procedures.

Insertion of flexible neural microelectrode probes is enabled by attaching probes to rigid stiffeners with polyethylene glycol (PEG). A unique assembly process ensures uniform and repeatable attachment. After insertion into tissue, the PEG dissolves and the stiffener is extracted. An in vitro test method evaluates the technique in agarose gel.

Errors in Taping

2025

Errors in taping arise from multiple factors that can significantly impact measurement accuracy in surveying. Misalignment of the tape, often due to human error, is one primary source. A skilled rear tapeman, using a telescope, can help correct alignment by guiding the head tapeman; however, human limitations still lead to small inaccuracies. These errors may include misplacement of pins or inaccurate tape readings due to common visual confusions, such as mistaking a six for a nine. Such...

Microscopy-Based Evaluation of Bacterial Attachment to Plant Root Surfaces

Source: Matthysse, A. G. Adherence of Bacteria to Plant Surfaces Measured in the Laboratory. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the evaluation of bacterial attachment to plant roots using phase-contrast microscopy. Root samples from seedlings incubated with bacteria are first mounted to check for free bacteria. The samples are then washed to remove loosely attached bacteria and remounted using a suitable coverslip to prevent damage. Finally, the number of bacteria attached to the root...

Adhesion

Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules. Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow glass...
