Segmental Osteotomy

Segmental osteotomy is a surgical technique that divides a bone into two or more mobile segments so their position, shape, or alignment can be corrected. The surgeon creates controlled cuts through the bone, carefully preserves surrounding soft tissues and blood supply, repositions the segments, and stabilizes them with fixation devices while healing occurs. In medicine, this approach is used to treat skeletal deformities, restore functional alignment, and support reconstruction, particularly in maxillofacial and orthopedic procedures. By enabling precise three-dimensional correction, segmental osteotomy can improve occlusion, symmetry, movement, and overall structural function when a single bone cut cannot achieve the desired result.

This protocol describes an osteosynthesis technique using an intramedullary locking nail for standardized fixation of femur osteotomies, which can be used to analyze normal and defective bone healing in mice.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.

Anterior Eye Segment Dissection: A Method to Isolate Cornea Bearing Anterior Segment from Porcine Eye

Segmentation of three-dimensional data from many imaging techniques is a major bottleneck in analysis of complex biological systems. Here, we describe the use of SuRVoS Workbench to semi-automatically segment volumetric data at various length-scales using example datasets from cryo-electron tomography, cryo soft X-ray tomography, and phase contrast X-ray tomography techniques.
