Tear Fluid

Tear fluid is a protective secretion that maintains the health, comfort, and optical quality of the eye, making it important in medicine and ocular-surface research. Produced mainly by the lacrimal glands and distributed by blinking, it forms a layered film containing aqueous fluid, mucins, and lipids that lubricates the cornea, supports its surface, and helps remove particles; excess fluid drains through the lacrimal system. Changes in tear volume or composition can indicate dry eye and other disorders, while tear analysis supports diagnosis, treatment assessment, and research into noninvasive biomarkers of systemic and ocular disease.

Phenol Red Thread-based Sampling Procedure for Untargeted Tear Fluid Lipidomics in Biomarker Discovery

2025

This protocol describes a unique clinical protocol for collecting human tear fluid samples using phenol red threads and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based workflow to discover the tear lipidomic profile. The simple methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)/methanol biphasic separation method enables rapid tear lipid extraction with high recovery for tear biomarker discovery.

Capsulorhexis is an important step in phacoemulsification surgery. A surgeon creates a continous curvilinear tear on the anterior lens capsule by controlling the tearing vector forces. A peripherally extended tear is a serious complication. This video demonstrates a novel technique of rescuing capsular radial tear out using a cystotome.
