Vascular Function Assessment

Vascular function assessment is the evaluation of how blood vessels regulate blood flow, pressure, and exchange between blood and tissues, providing insight into cardiovascular health. It commonly examines endothelial function by measuring changes in vessel diameter or blood flow after a controlled stimulus, such as increased shear stress during reactive hyperemia; impaired dilation can indicate vascular dysfunction. In medicine, these assessments support cardiovascular risk evaluation, study disease mechanisms, and monitoring responses to interventions. Their noninvasive or minimally invasive approaches also help connect vascular biology with patient outcomes and may improve early detection and personalized care.

The degree of vascular dysfunction and contributing physiological mechanisms can be assessed in patients with chronic kidney disease by measuring brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, aortic pulse-wave velocity, and vascular endothelial cell protein expression.

Assessing Mitochondrial Function in Cerebral Vascular Endothelial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates the assessment of the mitochondrial functioning of cerebral vascular endothelial (CVE) cells using an extracellular flux assay. CVE cells are plated in an extracellular flux cell culture plate. Extracellular flux sensors are hydrated before loading and calibration into the bioanalyzer. The plate containing cells is then loaded for analysis.

The rodent retina has long been recognized as an accessible window to the brain. In this technical paper we provide a protocol that employs the mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy to study the mechanisms that lead to failure of vascular regeneration within the central nervous system after ischemic injury. The described system can also be harnessed to explore strategies to promote regrowth of functional blood vessels within the retina and CNS.
