Visual Analog Scale

The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) is a measurement tool that converts a person's subjective experience, most commonly pain intensity, into a numerical score for clinical assessment and research. Typically, the patient marks a position on a 100-mm line anchored by descriptions such as “no pain” and “worst imaginable pain”; the distance from the low-intensity anchor provides the score. Clinicians use the VAS to quantify symptoms, compare responses before and after treatment, and monitor change over time. In medicine, its simple format supports standardized outcome measurement, although results depend on patient understanding, consistent instructions, and the symptom being assessed.

Hydronium and hydroxide ions are present both in pure water and in all aqueous solutions, and their concentrations are inversely proportional as determined by the ion product of water (Kw). The concentrations of these ions in a solution are often critical determinants of the solution’s properties and the chemical behaviors of its other solutes. Two different solutions can differ in their hydronium or hydroxide ion concentrations by a million, billion, or even trillion times. A common means of...

(2017)This video demonstrates the infection of stationary-phase mammalian cells with HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus-1), followed by replication of the viral genome using host and viral replication machinery. A synthetic nucleoside analog is incorporated into newly synthesized viral DNA to label replicating genomes, which are subsequently isolated for...

The power input in stirred bioreactors can be measured through the torque that acts on the impeller shaft during rotation. This manuscript describes how an air bearing can be used to effectively reduce friction losses observed in mechanical seals and improve the accuracy of power input measurements in small-scale vessels.

In designing and analyzing filters, resonant circuits, or circuit analysis at large, working with standard element values like 1 ohm, 1 henry, or 1 farad can be convenient before scaling these values to more realistic figures. This approach is widely utilized by not employing realistic element values in numerous examples and problems; it simplifies mastering circuit analysis through convenient component values. The complexity of calculations is thereby reduced, with the understanding that...
