Wedge Resection Technique

Wedge resection is a surgical technique that removes a wedge-shaped portion of tissue containing a lesion while preserving as much surrounding organ as possible. Surgeons identify the target area, define an appropriate margin, and excise the tissue using open or minimally invasive instruments, then control bleeding and close the remaining tissue. In thoracic medicine, lung wedge resection can provide a diagnostic specimen or treat selected small, peripheral lesions, including some early-stage tumors, when conserving lung function is important. The technique is also applied to localized abnormalities in other organs, with the choice of procedure guided by lesion size, location, pathology, and patient condition.

A wedge is a simple machine that serves various purposes, such as adjusting the elevation of structural or mechanical parts, providing stability for heavy objects, and splitting a body into two parts. This versatile tool can amplify an applied force, making it easier to manipulate large or heavy objects. Consider using a wedge to lift a heavy slab. Here, the wedge functions by converting the applied force into a much larger force directed almost perpendicular to the initial force. This...

This video demonstrates the process of preparing wedge-shaped brain slices in a laboratory setting. Using a vibratome, a wedge-shaped slice from a mouse's brain is crafted with varying thickness. This slice contains the auditory nerve root positioned on the thicker end, while the hearing-related neurons are located on the thinner end.

(2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...
