Area Under Curve

Area under the curve (AUC) is a quantitative measure of the total magnitude of a variable across a defined range, making it useful for comparing cumulative biological responses. It is calculated by integrating a plotted signal, such as neural activity, over time or another relevant dimension; numerical methods such as the trapezoidal rule estimate the value when measurements are discrete. In neuroscience, AUC can summarize the duration and intensity of evoked potentials, calcium signals, firing-rate changes, or drug-related responses, helping researchers compare experimental conditions and relate signal dynamics to behavior, disease processes, or treatment effects.

Calibration Curves

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Calibration curves are used to understand the instrumental response to an analyte and predict the concentration in an unknown sample. Generally, a set of standard samples are made at various concentrations with a range than includes the unknown of interest and the instrumental response at each concentration is recorded. For more accuracy and to understand the error, the response at each concentration can be repeated so an error...

Heating and Cooling Curves

2020

When a substance—isolated from its environment—is subjected to heat changes, corresponding changes in temperature and phase of the substance is observed; this is graphically represented by heating and cooling curves. For instance, the addition of heat raises the temperature of a solid; the amount of heat absorbed depends on the heat capacity of the solid (q = mcsolidΔT). According to thermochemistry, the relation between the amount of heat absorbed or released by a substance, q, and its...

Acid-Base Titration Curves

A titration curve is a plot of some solution property versus the amount of added titrant. For acid-base titrations, solution pH is a useful property to monitor because it varies predictably with the solution composition and, therefore, may be used to monitor the titration’s progress and detect its endpoint. Acid-base titration can be performed with a strong acid and a strong base, a strong acid and a weak base, or a strong base and a weak acid. For a titration carried out for 25.00 mL of 0.100...

Deriving the Demand Curve from Price Consumption Curve

2024

The price consumption curve shows how the optimal bundle changes with the change in prices of one good. For example, the student changed their purchase of books and snacks with a change in the prices of books. This relation between price changes of books and the quantity of books purchased helps derive the demand curve for books. For each optimal bundle, the quantity of books purchased and the corresponding price of books are noted. This gives the quantity of books demanded by the student at...

DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Growth curves provide valuable information on bacterial growth kinetics and cell physiology. They allow us to determine how bacteria respond in variable growth conditions as well as to define optimal growth parameters for a given bacterium. An archetypal growth curve progresses...
