Behavioral Responses

Behavioral responses are observable actions or changes in activity that organisms produce in response to internal states, external stimuli, or environmental conditions. In neuroscience, sensory information is encoded by neural circuits, integrated with prior experience and physiological state, and converted into motor or behavioral output through coordinated activity across the brain and nervous system. Studying these responses helps researchers link neural activity to perception, learning, emotion, motivation, and decision-making. Experimental analysis of behavior, including controlled stimulus presentation and measurement of movement or choice, provides essential evidence for understanding brain function and neurological disorders.

2025

Presented here is a video analysis pipeline that overcomes challenges in behavioral monitoring within MRI environments, allowing for the detection of uninstructed behavioral responses to external cues. This analysis will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of evoked internal state changes and brain-wide activity.

We developed the Visual-Motor Response to quantitate the motor output of larval zebrafish in response to light increments and decrements. We also examined zebrafish vision mutants, including the no optokinetic response (nrc) mutants, which were thought to be completely blind when tested by another vision assay, the optokinetic reflex.

Photomotor Response Assay: A Method to Measure the Behavioral Response of Larval Zebrafish to a Sudden Change in Lighting Condition

This video describes the photomotor response assay of zebrafish and fathead minnow larvae using an automated tracking software. The protocol measures the behavioral response of the larval fish following a sudden change in lighting condition.

We have developed two methods for studying effects of visual cues on behavior in the absence of tactile and chemical cues. One method involves videotaping responses of crayfish to reflective walls in an aquarium; the other examines effects of visual inputs provided by a live crayfish behind a transparent partition.

Navigational Behavior of Drosophila Larvae in Response to Optogenetic Stimulation of Olfactory Sensory Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates a study of the navigational behavior of Drosophila larvae in response to optogenetic stimulation of olfactory sensory neurons (ORNs). Transgenic Drosophila larvae expressing light-sensitive ion channels in the ORNs are placed on agarose within a behavior arena. Optogenetic stimulation with light opens the channels, causing a cation influx that triggers the transmission of the signal to the brain, and the navigation behavior is recorded.
