Drosophila Tracking

Drosophila tracking is the measurement and analysis of fruit-fly position and movement over time, providing a quantitative way to study behavior and its neural basis. In a typical assay, video recordings are processed with computer-vision methods to detect flies, follow their coordinates across frames, and convert trajectories into features such as speed, turning, distance traveled, and spatial preference. In neuroscience, these measurements link sensory stimuli, genetic or neural manipulations, and behavioral responses under controlled conditions. Tracking supports studies of locomotion, courtship, social interactions, learning, and sleep, while improving reproducibility and enabling comparisons across individuals, environments, and experimental conditions.

To detect healthy cells in whole animals that contain low levels of caspase activity, the highly sensitive biosensor designated CaspaseTracker was generated for Drosophila. Caspase-dependent biosensor activity is detected in long-lived healthy cells throughout the internal organs of adult animals reared under optimized conditions in the absence of death stimuli.
