Fluorescent Neurons

Fluorescent neurons are nerve cells made visible by fluorescent molecules that emit light after excitation, allowing researchers to distinguish and study specific neural populations. Genetic constructs can direct neurons to produce fluorescent proteins, while chemical dyes or indicator molecules can label cellular structures or signals; under fluorescence microscopy, emitted light reveals cell bodies, dendrites, axons, and connectivity patterns. This labeling supports neuronal morphology analysis, circuit tracing, and identification of active or disease-related cells, helping neuroscience researchers link cellular organization with brain function and evaluate experimental models and interventions.

2025

This video demonstrates how neuronal vesicles are labeled with specific fluorescent proteins to visualize their movement. First, a plasmid coding for a fluorescent protein is incubated with a transfection agent and then introduced into a culture of neurons. Subsequently, images of the neurons are acquired and analyzed to track the vesicles' movement.

2011

FRAP has been used to quantify the mobility of Green Fluorescence Protein (GFP)-tagged proteins in cultured cells. We examined the mobile/immobile fractions of the GFP by analyzing the fluorescence recovery percentage after photobleaching. In this study, FRAP was performed at spines of hippocampal neurons.
