Infrared Laser Application

Infrared laser application refers to using coherent infrared light to measure, image, or influence matter, including neural tissue, where its wavelength and energy can be tailored to specific experimental goals. In neuroscience, infrared laser pulses can penetrate or interact with tissue through absorption, scattering, photothermal effects, or nonlinear excitation, while beam intensity, pulse duration, and wavelength determine the biological response. These properties support two-photon microscopy, neural stimulation, optical recording, and targeted manipulation of brain circuits. Infrared laser methods can improve spatial precision and access to deep or delicate structures, advancing studies of neural connectivity, activity, and disease mechanisms.

We describe the generation of far-infrared radiation using an optically pumped molecular laser along with the measurement of their frequencies with heterodyne techniques. The experimental system and techniques are demonstrated using difluoromethane (CH2F2) as the laser medium whose results include three new laser emissions and eight measured laser frequencies.

Sutures are usually needed to repair tissue during surgical procedures. However, their application can be problematic as they are invasive and may damage tissue. The fabrication and application methods of a novel tissue adhesive are here reported. This adhesive film is laser-activated and does not require the use of sutures.

A mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) source operated at atmospheric pressure was developed by coupling mid-infrared laser desorption and electrospray post-ionization. Exogenous ice matrix was used as the energy-absorbing matrix to facilitate resonant desorption of tissue-related material. This manuscript provides a step-by-step protocol for performing IR-MALDESI MSI of whole-body neonatal mouse.
