Insect Metabolism

Insect metabolism is the network of biochemical reactions that converts nutrients into energy, cellular building blocks, and signals needed for growth, movement, reproduction, and survival. Nutrients are processed through pathways such as glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation, while trehalose in the hemolymph helps distribute carbohydrate energy to tissues; hormonal and neuropeptide signals adjust these pathways to changing demands. In neuroscience, metabolism supports neuronal ion gradients, synaptic transmission, and sensory and motor activity. Studying these links clarifies how nutrition, stress, temperature, and developmental state influence insect behavior and neural function, while identifying metabolic processes relevant to comparative biology and pest-control research.

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

What is Metabolism?

2019

Overview Metabolism represents all of the chemical activity in a cell, including reactions that build molecules (anabolism) and those that break molecules down (catabolism). Anabolic reactions require energy, whereas catabolic reactions provide it. Thus, metabolism describes how cells transform energy through a variety of chemical reactions, which are often made more efficient with the help of enzymes. Metabolism Is the Sum of All of the Chemical Reactions That Take Place in an Organism

A Simple Flight Mill for the Study of Tethered Flight in Insects

2015

Flight in insects is influenced by a number of factors and the propensity to disperse is an important variable in understanding insect ecology and biological control strategies. We describe the construction and use of a simple, relatively inexpensive, and flexible flight mill for measuring parameters of tethered flight in insects.

Insect-controlled Robot: A Mobile Robot Platform to Evaluate the Odor-tracking Capability of an Insect

The capability to localize an odor source is necessary for insect survival and is expected to be applicable to artificial odor-tracking. The insect-controlled robot is driven by an actual silkmoth and enables us to evaluate the odor-tracking capability of insects through a robotic platform.
