Neuroma Pain

Neuroma pain is a neuropathic pain condition caused by an injured nerve that develops a disorganized bundle of regenerating nerve fibers, often after surgery, amputation, or trauma. During attempted nerve repair, axons and supporting cells grow irregularly, creating a neuroma that can generate spontaneous electrical activity and become highly sensitive to pressure or movement. Symptoms may include sharp, burning, or electric-shock-like pain and tenderness at the injury site. Understanding neuroma formation supports clinical diagnosis, targeted pain management, and the development of surgical and regenerative strategies that guide nerve healing and reduce persistent pain.

Source: Brakkee, E. M., et al. Surgery and Behavioral Testing in the Tibial Neuroma Transposition Model in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2023).This video demonstrates a procedure to generate a rat tibial neuroma transposition (TNT) model. After exposing the tibial nerve in the hind leg of an anesthetized rat, transect the nerve. Next, create a subcutaneous tunnel, thread the severed nerve through the tunnel, and suture it in place. In the absence of a target for reinnervation, disorganized axonal...

Stromal Vascular Fraction-Enriched Fat Grafting for the Management of Symptomatic Neuromas

Source: Zimmermann, S., et.al. Stromal Vascular Fraction-enriched Fat Grafting for the Treatment of Symptomatic End-neuromata. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the surgical procedure for neurolysis and stromal vascular fraction (SVF)-enriched fat grafting in the management of symptomatic neuroma. Neurolysis removes adhesion tissue to restore nerve gliding, while SVF-enriched fat grafting is applied around the nerve to create a protective barrier, support nerve healing, and enhance...

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...
