Neuronal Activity Measurement

Neuronal activity measurement comprises methods for detecting and quantifying how neurons generate and communicate signals, a foundation for understanding nervous system function. These methods capture electrical activity, such as membrane-potential changes and action potentials, or optical indicators of activity, such as activity-dependent calcium signals, using techniques including electrophysiology and calcium imaging. Researchers use these measurements to relate individual neuron responses to neural-circuit dynamics, behavior, sensory processing, and disease states. Comparing activity across cells, brain regions, or experimental conditions also supports studies of synaptic function, neurological disorders, and the effects of drugs or other interventions.

Measuring the Electrophysiological Activity of Neuronal Networks Using Micro-Electrode Arrays

2025

The video demonstrates how to use a microelectrode array (MEA) to record the electrophysiological activity of neurons derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). Electrophysiological activity from a multiwell MEA containing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture is recorded to detect action potentials from multiple neurons in the network, confirming the successful differentiation of hiPSCs into neurons.

This video demonstrates establishing a neuron-astrocyte co-culture for recording neuronal network activity. Upon establishing the co-culture of motor neurons and astrocytes on a multi-electrode array (MEA) plate, the synchronous rhythmic electrical activity of the neuronal network was recorded extracellularly using the MEA.

(2015)This video demonstrates a microinjection-based technique for simultaneous neuronal recording and inhibition in the rat superior colliculus. The procedure involves stereotaxic targeting, skull drilling, and the insertion of an injectrode, which delivers an inhibitory neurotransmitter while recording neuronal activity. Place an anesthetized neonatal pup on a heating pad.Disinfect the scalp with ethanol.Fill a syringe with a viral solution containing adeno-associated viruses carrying the gene for a drug-activated inhibitory receptor and a tracking dye.Align the syringe tip with the pup’s head and slowly inject the virus into the brain for even distribution.Allow the pup to recover.During incubation, viral particles enter neurons and release their genetic material into the nucleus. It leads to inhibitory...
