Bronchodilation Effect

The bronchodilation effect is the widening of the airways when bronchial smooth muscle relaxes, improving airflow through the lungs. In pharmacology, this response commonly occurs when beta2-adrenergic agonists activate receptors that increase intracellular cyclic AMP and relax smooth muscle; anticholinergic drugs promote bronchodilation by blocking muscarinic signaling that otherwise causes airway constriction. Measuring this effect with pulmonary function tests, including changes in forced expiratory volume, helps assess airway reversibility and drug activity. Bronchodilators are central to treating reversible airflow limitation in asthma and reducing symptoms and exacerbations associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

2024

Chronic obstructive pulmonary isease (COPD) involves a group of progressive lung disorders characterized by persistent airflow limitation and chronic respiratory symptoms. Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome (ACOS), encompassing features of both asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a group of progressive lung disorders that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. ACOS leads to complex clinical presentations that combine the inflammatory...

Here, we present a protocol to quantify allergen-loaded particles by flow cytometry. Ambient particulate matter particles may act as carriers of adsorbed allergens. We show here that flow cytometry, a method widely used to characterize suspended solids >0.5 µm in diameter, can be used to measure these allergen-loaded particles.

Determining the fungal diversity within an environment is a method utilized in occupational health studies to identify health hazards. This protocol describes DNA extraction from occupational air samples for amplification and sequencing of fungal ITS regions. This approach detects many fungal species that can be overlooked by traditional assessment methods.

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

Cited by 4 •

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.
