Toxic Chemicals

Toxic chemicals are substances that can injure living organisms when exposure exceeds the body’s ability to prevent, detoxify, or repair damage, making toxicity a central concern in pharmacology and public health. Their effects depend on dose, exposure route, duration, and biological susceptibility; at the molecular level, they may bind receptors or enzymes, disrupt cell membranes, interfere with metabolism, or generate oxidative stress that alters cellular function. Studying these mechanisms helps pharmacologists distinguish therapeutic effects from adverse effects, establish safer exposure limits, and evaluate drug candidates. Toxic-chemical research also supports poisoning management, environmental risk assessment, biomonitoring, and treatments that reduce harmful interactions or promote elimination.

This protocol is designed to demonstrate exposure method of cell cultures to inhaled toxic chemicals. Exposure of differentiated air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures of airway epithelial cells provides a unique model of airway exposure to toxic gases such as chlorine. In this manuscript we describe effect of chlorine exposure on air-liquid interface cultures of epithelial cells and submerged culture of cardiomyocytes. In vitro exposure systems allow important mechanistic studies to evaluate...

Investigation of early endothelial cell (EEC) migration is important to understand the pathophysiology of certain illnesses and to potentially identify novel strategies for therapeutic intervention. The following protocol describes techniques to assess cell migration that have been adapted for the investigation of EEC.

We describe a screening system's workflow and data analysis for evaluating chemical compound toxicity based on the zebrafish embryo vibration startle response. The system records the movements of zebrafish embryos upon exposure to a vibration stimulus and allows for an integrated evaluation of general toxicity/lethality and neuromuscular toxicity.
