Twitch Kinetics Properties

Twitch kinetics properties describe the time-dependent features of a single skeletal muscle contraction, including latency, contraction time, relaxation time, and twitch tension. After an action potential reaches the muscle fiber, excitation-contraction coupling triggers calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum; calcium then activates actin-myosin cross-bridge cycling before reuptake permits relaxation. In pharmacology, measuring these properties helps characterize muscle contractility and assess how drugs, toxins, anesthetics, and neuromuscular blockers alter excitation, calcium handling, or force generation. Changes in twitch amplitude and timing can distinguish effects on nerve transmission from direct effects on the muscle and support evaluation of therapeutic and toxicological responses.

Kinetic Molecular Theory and Gas Laws Explain Properties of Gas Molecules

2020

The test of the kinetic molecular theory (KMT) and its postulates is its ability to explain and describe the behavior of a gas. The various gas laws (Boyle’s, Charles’s, Gay-Lussac’s, Avogadro’s, and Dalton’s laws) can be derived from the assumptions of the KMT, which have led chemists to believe that the assumptions of the theory accurately represent the properties of gas molecules. The Kinetic Molecular Theory Explains the Behavior of Gases Recalling that gas pressure is exerted by rapidly...

In this study, a nano-microfluidic flow chamber was employed to visualize and functionally characterize the twitching motility of Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that causes Pierce's disease in grapevine.

Enzyme Assays and Kinetics

2023

Enzyme kinetics describes the catalytic effects of enzymes, which are biomolecules that facilitate chemical reactions necessary for living organisms. Enzymes act on molecules, referred to as substrates, to form products. Enzyme kinetic parameters are determined via assays that directly or indirectly measure changes in substrate or product concentration over time. This video will cover the basic principles of enzyme kinetics (including rate equations) and kinetic models. The concepts governing...

Kinetic Energy

2019

Kinetic energy is the ability of an object in motion to do work or enact change. It can take on many forms. For instance, water flowing down a waterfall has kinetic energy. In biological systems, particles of light travel and are absorbed by plants to create chemical energy. Animals consume the chemical energy and give off molecules that carry their scent through the air. They also generate kinetic energy when they run away from predators. Entire systems also possess kinetic energy, like the...
