Coping Strategies

Coping strategies are the thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses people use to manage stress, adversity, and challenging situations. In psychology, they work by influencing how individuals appraise a stressor and regulate their responses, often through problem-focused actions that address its cause or emotion-focused methods that reduce distress. Strategies may include planning, seeking social support, cognitive reframing, relaxation, and avoidance, with effectiveness depending on the situation, timing, and individual needs. Studying coping strategies helps researchers and practitioners understand resilience, support mental health, and develop interventions for anxiety, trauma, chronic illness, and everyday stress.

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

2025

Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress. For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Coping Strategies: Emotion Focused

Emotion-focused coping refers to a set of strategies aimed at managing the emotional impact of stressors, rather than directly addressing their causes. This approach involves altering one's emotional response to stressful situations to reduce their psychological effects. For example, individuals might talk with a friend or engage in activities like journaling to express their feelings. Such actions can help achieve emotional clarity or release, providing the psychological stability needed to...

Amines to Alkenes: Cope Elimination

Cope elimination reaction involves the conversion of tertiary amines to alkene using hydrogen peroxide under thermal conditions, as depicted in figure 1. Figure 1. The Cope elimination reaction The mechanism of the reaction is illustrated in Figure 2. Here, the oxidation of tertiary amines by hydrogen peroxide yields amine oxide. Subsequently, the thermally induced elimination of the N,N-dimethyl hydroxylamine as leaving group occurs. However, it produces a less substituted alkene as the major...

[3,3] Sigmatropic Rearrangement of 1,5-Dienes: Cope Rearrangement

2023

The Cope rearrangement is classified as a [3,3] sigmatropic shift in 1,5-dienes, leading to a more stable, isomeric 1,5-diene. The reaction involves a concerted movement of six electrons, four from two π bonds and two from a σ bond, via an energetically favorable chair-like transition state. From a molecular orbital perspective, the rearrangement can be viewed as the interaction between the ground state frontier orbitals of the allyl anion and cation. Under thermal conditions, the two π...

New Variations for Strategy Set-shifting in the Rat

Set-shifting, a form of behavioral flexibility, requires an attentional shift from one stimulus dimension to another. We extended an established rodent set-shifting task1 by requiring attention to different stimuli according to context. The task was combined with specific lesions to identify neuron subtypes underlying a successful shift.
