Negative Affectivity

Negative affectivity is a relatively stable tendency to experience unpleasant emotions, such as anxiety, sadness, anger, and irritability, and to interpret situations as distressing. In psychology, it reflects individual differences in emotional reactivity: people with higher negative affectivity may respond more strongly to stressors, sustain negative moods longer, and attend more readily to potential threats or problems. Researchers assess it through self-report measures, behavioral observation, and related personality constructs such as neuroticism. Studying negative affectivity helps explain variation in stress responses, coping, mental health risk, interpersonal functioning, and well-being, while informing psychological assessment and interventions designed to regulate emotion and reduce distress.

The Influence of Cognition on Affect

Cognition plays a pivotal role in shaping emotional experiences, as demonstrated by Schachter and Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion. According to this model, emotion arises from a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation. The body’s physiological response to stimuli is ambiguous and only gains emotional significance through cognitive labeling. For instance, an increased heart rate and adrenaline surge while standing near an attractive person may be interpreted as...

Background and Environment Affect Phenotype

Although the genetic makeup of an organism plays a major role in determining the phenotype, there are also several environmental factors, such as temperature, oxygen availability, presence of mutagens, that can alter an organism’s phenotype. An example of how genetic background affects phenotype can be seen in horses. The Extension gene in horses is responsible for their coat color. A wild-type gene (EE) produces black pigment in the coat, while a mutant gene (ee) produces red pigment. A...
