Saccade Analysis

Saccade analysis is the study of rapid, coordinated eye movements that shift the line of sight between visual targets, providing a window into attention, perception, and cognitive control. It typically uses eye tracking to measure saccade direction, amplitude, duration, velocity, and latency as participants view stimuli or perform tasks. In psychology, these measures help researchers examine visual search, reading, decision-making, memory, and attentional processing, while atypical patterns can indicate changes in neurological or psychiatric function. Saccade analysis therefore links observable eye behavior with underlying mental processes and supports both basic research and the assessment of cognitive performance.

The article describes a practical method for recording horizontal eye movements with high accuracy by electro-oculogram in neurological patients, using a cup Ag-AgCl electrode with a wide plastic fringe. Stable measurement requires proper selection and fixation of electrodes, taking sufficient time for light adaptation to occur, and re-calibration as needed.

Salmonella invades and replicates inside intestinal epithelial cells both in Salmonella-specific vacuoles and free in the cytosol (hyper-replication). A high-throughput fluorescence microscopy-based protocol is described here to quantify the intracellular phenotypes of Salmonella by two complementary image analyses through ImageJ, reaching single-cell resolution and scoring.

Eye Tracking in Cognitive Experiments

2023

Eye tracking as the name suggests involves tracking of eye-movements. It is a non-invasive, sensitive tool that quantifies and measures eye-movements to describe an individuals' cognitive state. An eye-movement between two fixation points is called a saccade, which is one of the fastest motor movements in our body. By observing the profiles of these eye movements, scientists can better understand neural deficits in patients with cognitive impairments. In this video, we will first look at an...
