Data Standardization

Data standardization is the process of transforming measurements to a common scale so that variables with different units, ranges, or magnitudes can be compared and analyzed consistently in statistics. A common approach subtracts each observation’s mean and divides by its standard deviation, producing a z-score with a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one; other procedures may rescale values to a defined interval. Standardized data can improve the interpretation of regression coefficients, distance-based methods, clustering, and machine-learning models by preventing large-unit variables from dominating results. It also supports clearer visualization and more reliable comparisons across datasets, provided the transformation is documented and interpreted appropriately.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia The goal of many chemical analyses is a quantitative analysis, where the amount of a substance in a sample is determined. In order to accurately calculate the concentration of an unknown from a sample, careful sample preparation is key. Every time a sample is handled or transferred, some of the sample can be lost. There are strategies however, for minimizing sample loss. There are also strategies for coping with sample loss and...

Optimized sampling protocols and the development of new wipe materials can be facilitated by standardized measurements of collection efficiency from wipe-sampling. Our approach for sampling trace explosives uses an automated device to control speed, force, and distance during wipe-sampling followed by extraction of collected explosives.

Measurement: Standard Units

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

Method of Standard Addition

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Paul Bower - Purdue University The method of standard additions is a quantitative analysis method, which is often used when the sample of interest has multiple components that result in matrix effects, where the additional components may either reduce or enhance the analyte absorbance signal. That results in significant errors in the analysis results. Standard additions are commonly used to eliminate matrix effects from a measurement, since it is assumed that the...
