Quantitative Estimate

Quantitative estimation is the statistical process of using numerical data to approximate an unknown quantity, such as a population mean, proportion, or treatment effect. It works by calculating an estimator from a sample and interpreting its value through sampling variability, often summarized with a standard error, confidence interval, or margin of error. In research, quantitative estimates turn observations into measurable evidence, support comparisons and predictions, and indicate how precisely a sample represents a broader population. Their reliability depends on study design, sample size, measurement quality, and assumptions about the data, making estimation central to evidence-based scientific reasoning.

Quantitative Western Blotting to Estimate Protein Expression Levels

2025

The video demonstrates a total protein normalization-based western blotting technique for quantifying the target protein expression in a sample. By utilizing the total protein staining of the sample, a ratiometric analysis is performed to determine the relative expression level of the target protein.

Quantitative Dot Blot to Estimate Target Proteins in a Tissue Lysate

2025

This video demonstrates a quantitative dot blot, or QDB, technique for the absolute quantification of proteins of interest in a tissue sample. The proteins in the sample are immobilized on the nitrocellulose membrane inside the wells of a QDB plate. Utilizing target protein-specific antibodies labeled with a peroxidase enzyme, a chemiluminescent substrate is oxidized to produce light, which is measured to determine the protein concentration of the sample.

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

What are Estimates?

It isn't easy to measure a parameter such as the mean height or the mean weight of a population. So, we draw samples from the population and calculate the mean height or mean weight of the individuals in the sample. This sample data acts as a representative measure of the population parameter. These sample statistics are known as estimates. The estimate for the mean of a sample is denoted by ͞x, whereas the mean of the population is designated as μ. Further, parameters such as the mean,...

Quantitative Fitness Analysis (QFA) is a complementary series of experimental and computational methods for estimating microbial culture fitnesses. QFA estimates the effect of genetic mutations, drugs or other applied treatments on microbe growth. Experiments scaling from focussed analysis of single cultures to thousands of parallel cultures can be designed.
