Question 1

Do young children believe everything they hear?

Accepted Answer

Contrary to popular belief, young children are not entirely gullible. Recent research shows that children as young as age 3 evaluate what others say and demonstrate selective trust in testimony. They pay attention to an individual's prior behavior and use that information to judge whether someone is a trustworthy informational source.

Question 2

How do children evaluate the trustworthiness of information sources?

Accepted Answer

Children assess trustworthiness by observing an individual's prior accuracy and behavior. They track whether someone has provided correct or incorrect information in the past, then use these observations to decide whose testimony to trust when receiving conflicting information. This selective trust emerges early and guides their learning choices.

Question 3

What is the purpose of the history phase in this trust experiment?

Accepted Answer

The history phase establishes each puppet's track record of accuracy. One puppet labels four common objects correctly while the other labels them all inaccurately. This creates a clear history of reliability that children can reference later, allowing researchers to measure whether children use prior accuracy to guide their choices in the test phase.

Question 4

How do researchers measure children's trust in the test phase?

Accepted Answer

During the test phase, children see pairs of novel objects and hear conflicting names from both puppets. Researchers then ask children to identify which object matches the name given. The dependent variable is how many times children choose the object named by the accurate puppet across three trials, revealing whether they trust the previously reliable source.

Question 5

Why do children need to rely on testimony to learn about the world?

Accepted Answer

Not all information can be observed directly. For example, children cannot see oxygen in the air or observe DNA firsthand. Therefore, they must rely on the testimony of teachers and other adults to learn about unobservable facts and concepts. This makes evaluating source trustworthiness essential for accurate learning.

Question 6

What does the confirmation phase reveal about children's understanding?

Accepted Answer

The confirmation phase asks children to label the original common objects from the history phase. This ensures children recognized those objects and understood the puppets' differing accuracy levels. Only children who performed well in this phase are included in data analysis, confirming they had the necessary comprehension to make informed trust judgments.

Question 7

How do children's trust judgments compare to chance levels in this experiment?

Accepted Answer

Research shows that both 3- and 4-year-old children chose objects labeled by the accurate puppet at rates significantly higher than chance levels. This demonstrates that even very young children can use observations of prior accuracy to make judgments about trustworthiness, even when evaluating unfamiliar objects and conflicting sources.
