Structural Protein Function

Le proteine strutturali sono una classe di proteine che supportano la forma e il movimento cellulare. Le proteine strutturali sono una categoria di proteine responsabili di funzioni che vanno dalla forma e movimento delle cellule al supporto di strutture principali come ossa, cartilagine, capelli e muscoli. Questo gruppo comprende proteine come collagene, actina, miosina e cheratina.

Il collagene, la proteina più abbondante nei mammiferi, si trova in tutto il corpo. Nel tessuto connettivo, come pelle, legamenti e tendini, fornisce resistenza alla trazione ed elasticità. Nelle ossa e nei denti si mineralizza per formare tessuti duri e contribuisce alla loro capacità di carico. Oltre al supporto strutturale, il collagene può anche interagire con i recettori della superficie cellulare e altre molecole intermedie per regolare i processi cellulari, come la crescita e la migrazione, che comportano cambiamenti nella forma delle cellule e dei tessuti.

Le proteine strutturali costituiscono la struttura di base del citoscheletro cellulare. Il citoscheletro è costituito da tre tipi di filamenti, microfilamenti, filamenti intermedi e microtubuli, ciascuno dei quali è composto da diverse proteine strutturali. Il microfilamento si forma quando l'actina si autopolimerizza in lunghe strutture ripetitive. Questi filamenti di actina contribuiscono alla forma e all'organizzazione delle cellule; inoltre, i microfilamenti possono anche contribuire al movimento e alla divisione cellulare, quando agiscono in combinazione con la miosina. Ad esempio, una mutazione in un gene che codifica per il collagene può provocare una condizione nota come osteogenesi imperfetta, caratterizzata da ossa deboli e deformità nei tessuti connettivi. Diverse mutazioni in un gene del collagene possono provocare la sindrome di Alport, che è caratterizzata da problemi a organi come reni, occhi e orecchie.

Structural proteins give cells and tissues shape, support, and strength. They help build bones, cartilage, hair, and muscles. Important examples include collagen, actin, myosin, and keratin.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals. It is found throughout the body. In skin, ligaments, and tendons, collagen adds tensile strength and elasticity. In bones and teeth, it helps form hard, load-bearing tissue through mineralization.

Collagen also does more than provide support. It can interact with cell surface receptors and other molecules to help control cellular processes. These processes include growth and migration, which involve changes in cell and tissue shape.

Structural proteins also form the cell cytoskeleton, which is the internal framework of the cell. The cytoskeleton contains three kinds of filaments: microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules. Each filament type is built from different structural proteins.

Microfilaments form when actin self-polymerizes into long, repeating strands. These actin filaments help maintain cell shape and organization. They also work with myosin to support cell movement and cell division.

Intermediate filaments vary by cell type. Around 70 different genes code for these proteins. Epithelial cells contain keratin, peripheral neurons contain peripherin, and muscle cell sarcomeres contain desmin. Their main role is to reinforce cells and organize them into tissues.

Microtubules are made of tubulin proteins. Tubulins self-assemble into structures that help organize the cytoplasm and position organelles. Microtubules are also essential for mitosis and cell division. Because structural proteins are so widespread, mutations in their genes can cause serious effects. For example, collagen gene mutations can lead to osteogenesis imperfecta, which causes weak bones and connective tissue deformities, or Alport syndrome, which affects the kidneys, eyes, and ears.

Integrate evidence to develop a structural model of a DNA molecule. Using the model, develop and communicate an explanation for how DNA serves as a template for self-replication and encodes biological information.
EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
