Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that help neurons communicate. They play a major role in nervous system function, as well as in mood, movement, sleep, and social behavior.

Serotonin is made in the brain and intestines. It is linked to well-being and happiness, and it helps regulate mood, appetite, and sleep. When serotonin levels are out of balance in the brain or in peripheral sites, depression and sleep problems can occur.

Dopamine is produced in several brain areas, including the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental area. It is a key part of the brain’s reward system and affects pleasure and motivation. Problems with dopamine signaling, such as too much production or too little receptor activity, are associated with Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia.

GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is made in the brain and helps lower neuron activity across neural networks. Low GABA levels can reduce inhibition in the brain and may lead to seizures, tremors, and insomnia.

Acetylcholine works in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It supports muscle activation and also helps with memory and attention. When acetylcholine is out of balance in the brain, it is linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Norepinephrine is produced mainly in the locus coeruleus in the brainstem. It helps control attention and the stress response. It also supports the fight-or-flight response by increasing alertness and helping regulate blood pressure during stress. Low norepinephrine can contribute to depressed mood and weaker stress resilience.

Endorphins are the body’s natural pain relievers. They are produced mainly in the central nervous system and help reduce pain while increasing pleasure. A lack of endorphins can increase anxiety and make pain feel stronger.

Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter. It is found widely across the brain and strengthens neuron-to-neuron communication. This makes it important for learning and memory. When glutamate is not properly regulated, it has been linked to epilepsy and autism.

Oxytocin is produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream through the pituitary gland. It plays an important role in social behavior and emotional bonding. It also supports reproductive behaviors and is involved in processes from childbirth to relationship bonding.
