Capture Probe

A capture probe is a recognition molecule designed to selectively bind and retain a target, such as a nucleic acid, protein, or cell, for detection, purification, or analysis. In bioengineering, the probe is often immobilized on a surface or incorporated into a device, where complementary base pairing, antibody-antigen binding, or other affinity interactions capture the target from a complex sample while unbound material is removed. Capture probes support biosensors, diagnostic assays, affinity purification, and microfluidic systems by improving target selectivity and enrichment. Their design influences assay sensitivity, specificity, stability, and performance in applications ranging from disease detection to engineered biological systems.
