Decellularized Lung Matrix

Decellularized lung matrix is a native lung scaffold from which cellular material has been removed while preserving key extracellular matrix components and the organ’s three-dimensional architecture. In bioengineering, chemical detergents, enzymes, and controlled perfusion can disrupt cell membranes and degrade nucleic acids, leaving a porous framework that retains features of the airways, alveoli, and vascular pathways. Researchers can seed this matrix with stem or specialized lung cells to study cell-matrix interactions, model disease, and investigate strategies for tissue regeneration. Its biomimetic structure offers a platform for developing engineered lung tissue, although achieving complete recellularization and functional integration remains challenging.
